I've got a small group that meets once a month to discuss the Zone Diet method of eating. We like to go to places that have a wide variety of food which makes ordering 'by the Zone' a bit easier. Dining at The Old Market Pub fits right in.
First off, it's a familiar setting for me as I used to live very near back in the days when the building was Comella's Market and Produce. I think that business went banko, and the daughter decided to have a go at it. The building was perfectly suited to a large produce operation. Plenty of warehouse space, filled with a central office area, and nooks and crannies galore. I remember large bins of produce, neatly stacked, with weigh scales hanging from the wooden trusses and the smell of fresh veggies.
After a few years Miss Comella gave it up and the building presented itself as the perfect neighborhood brewpub (see their website for more history of The Old Market Pub). Why the McMennamin Brothers didn't latch onto it I'll never know, as it would have made a perfect location for one of their brew pubs.
Since I've been going there, The Old Market Pub has had at least one renovation, which changed the back room area into a back bar and meeting space. It's a very comfortable, private mural decorated space that they rent free of charge with certain group size requirements. Anyone retiring soon??
Be that as it may, what sprang out of the jumble was one of the best west side brewpubs in Portland. The menu is unsurpassed in good tavern food, running the gamut from home sliced french fries( the only better ones are at the Raccoon Lodge), to home spun individual sized pizza, to handcrafted chili, and of course, the beer.
The beer, the beer, the beer. Over the years this pub has improved it's offering immeasurably. If you like good beer, try this brewpub and if you like good food and plenty of it, served by friendly staff, with a great view of the tremendously diverse Multnomah population, you'll love this pub.
